Het improvisatie theater bestaat al zo lang als het theater zelf.

In Griekse tragedies waren er delen van het verhaal die werden geïmproviseerd omdat de lokale acteurs niet het hele verhaal tot hun beschikking hadden. In de middeleeuwen moest de nar, naast zijn vast repertoire, vaak inspelen op de veranderingen die zich plots voordeden aan het hof, om zo in de gratie van zijn meester te blijven. Van de 16^de tot de 19^de eeuw was Commedia dell'arte een heel populaire vorm van improvisatie. Theater met Italiaanse roots.

Keith Johnstone, een Britse theaterregisseur en één van de grondleggers van het moderne improvisatietheater,  heeft verschillende bekende improvisatieformats gecreëerd. ook wel Theatersport genoemd. Zoals bijvoorbeeld het Gorillatheater, waarbij de acteurs elkaar regisseren. Door verschillende scènes te spelen, waarbij sommige acteurs de rol van regisseur op zich nemen, proberen ze deze scènes aan te passen. Ze voegen dingen toe, geven hints of herschrijven volledige stukken door de setting te veranderen.

Micetro; Dit is een afvalrace. Diverse scenes worden gespeeld en het publiek stemt de zwakste schakel er uit.

Life Game: Een interview tussen twee acteurs waarbij de andere acteurs verhalen spelen uit het leven van de geïnterviewde.

Er zijn intussen zo veel theatersport variaties en spellen dat elke improvistatiegroep wel zijn eigen richting uitgaat.

History of improv theater

Improv theater has been around as long as theater itself. In Greek tragedies, there were parts of story that were improvised because local actors didn't had the entire story at there disposal. In the dark ages (Middle Ages) the local jester had a steady repertoire but he had to fill the blanks to create and entertaining evening. He also had to act quickly to radical changes that happen at the court to fall in the grace of his lord, duke,... . In the 16th till 19th centuries there was the Commedia dell'arte: a popular form of improv with Italian roots.

Keith Johnstone, a British theater director is one of the founders of the modern improvisation theater. In fact the theater sport.
He has created different famous formats of improv: 

Like Gorillatheater Where actors will be directing each other. They'll be playing different scenes, but some actors take on the role of director and try to adjust the scenes by adding things to the scene, giving hints or completely rewriting different scenes in another setting.

Another Improvisation Theatersport is Micetro; This is a knock out race. The actors play different scenes. But the audience get's to decide which player get's voted off stage.
